Who remembers the Cotlands baby sanctuary in Stanton Street? Maureen Phillips, who now lives in the USA, was able to purchase the building in January 2023.
She has always wanted to bring the elderly generation and orphan children together so that the older can teach their skills and the younger can be their energy. In keeping with the legacy of the building, which previously housed Cotlands Baby Sanctuary, our intention is to assist the under-served such as Grandmoms and moms raising children alone.
Our facility will be called MOMOS Upliftment Centre. It will be a temporary home where we will share the love of Jesus, and teach basic skills. We will have rooms available where volunteers can offer their time on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis. In these “classrooms,†volunteers will share their skills and passions whether it be good housekeeping, art, hygiene, sewing, or mechanics. Who knows? This is a blank canvas and will be a community effort to help our Neighbours like Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan. We don’t want to just say “God bless youâ€but we want to be the blessing.
You ask where the name MOMO came from? It is an endearment name for Maureen, called by her grandchildren and loved ones. This will give her a presence in South Africa even when she is back in Texas. Amazingly Maureen lived a few blocks from Cotlands in her childhood.
If Maureen Phillips had designed her life, she could never have imagined what beautiful things the Lord had in store. Raised in South Africa, as a little girl Maureen loved stories that ended “and they got married and lived happily ever after.†Although the marriage didn’t work out , her reward was 2 amazing sons Clinton and Brenton.
God showed Maureen her plight could either be a stumbling block or a stepping stone – to trip over or to step on and grow taller. She chose the latter – which is where her great adventure started.
God blessed her with her own business in South Africa enabling her to attend every school event for her boys, run various Bible Studies, teach a Children’s church class of 300 children for 21 years, and graduate from Bible school.
In 2002, she moved to Aspen Colorado to help Clint and Brent in business and to fuss over her first grandchild.
She then moved to Houston Texas in 2011 where her sons founded an amazing company called 2nd.MD – a company that solves complex healthcare problems for over one million members. Maureen was the General Manager. The company sold in 2021. The Lord had blessed them good measure, pressed down , shaken together and running over!
